The beach of Aldeia do Meco remained practically unknown due to isolation and difficult access. He began to gain fame in the summer of the early 1970s. A group of American, Swedish and Dutch hippies discovered the beach, which is not accessible by road. Fifteen years after the arrival of this group, the beach has become a holiday destination for some of Lisbon's elite.
Extensive (about 4 km) and sometimes rough sea, the southern part of the great dune is legal for the practice of naturism. It was, in fact, this fact that made Praia do Meco famous.
This beach is annually the stage for an international ultimate frisbee tournament: Torneio Internacional Bar do Peixe.
