Description
Quinta do Tanque is a historic property, with an imposing Noble House with chapel, located in the municipality of Anadia, Bairrada region.
This fantastic property has an immense history from the time of its construction to the intellectuals and individuals who passed through there.
This Noble House is a work whose layout is due to the renowned statuary Machado de Castro and its elegant palatial construction, with sober lines, Pombalino type, was built by Captain-Major Albino Xavier Cerveira, father of the Bishop and professor at the University of Coimbra D . Jose Xavier Cerveira e Sousa, was Bishop of Funchal, Beja and Viseu, whose episcopal arms are represented in the coat of arms that ennobles the main facade of the building.
Despite being built in the first half of the 20th century. XIX (1800's), this imposing house presents a style that revives what was used at the end of the previous century, with a deep Pombalino taste. It was probably built on an old house that already existed on the site, belonging to the Cerveira family that had lived in the locality for several generations.
The architect responsible for the work is not known, some historians argue that the sculptor Machado de Castro influenced the choice of architect, and according to others, he himself was responsible for the project.
This situation is supported by the relationship of kinship and friendship that the sculptor maintained with the Cerveira family.
Machado de Castro was one of the greatest and most renowned Portuguese sculptors, he was also one of the most influential sculptors in Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Machado de Castro's best-known work is the equestrian statue of King D. Jose, in Terreiro do Paco in Lisbon.
The building consists of two floors, with a third, in the form of a mansard or attic over the central part.
The facade is divided into three parts by pilasters.
On both sides of the house there are reasons worth mentioning. On the left side, we find a gate that gives access to the courtyard, dating from the 17th century. XVII (prior to the construction of the building).
On the right side appears the chapel, the ex-libris of this property.
In this chapel there is a work worth highlighting: it is the Altarpiece of the Saints Physicists, representing Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. Being considered a work of great importance for the Coimbra Renaissance, it was created between 1510 and 1530 and there is no certainty about the workshop responsible for the work, but it dates back to the time when Joao de Ruao, a sculptor born in Ruao in Normandy in 1500, very famous in his time, he had a workshop in Coimbra.
This chapel was built by D. Antonio Xavier de Cerveira e Sousa, commander of the Order of Christ, so that his wife D. Maria Jose Pereira e Costa could be buried there, who died in 1842 and was transferred to this chapel in 1844.
In the unique work of the writer Julio Castilho 'Memorias de Castilho', there are many descriptions of his moments at Quinta do Tanque and the gatherings that took place there, Julio Dinis's family came from the same town and the houses were very close to each other .
