SOME HISTORICAL NOTES
The first news on the fortified village of Pugliano (ancient name of Podigliano) dates back to the 12th century and the papal bulls of HadrianIV, AlexanderIII and InnocentIII .
In the 13th century, Podigliano became the "capital" of the Bishopric and seat of the vicar of the bishop of Tortona.
The castle, equipped with a strong tower, was the residence of the Bishops of Tortona both in times of danger and during holiday periods. It was a privileged place for Pope Adrian IV and Pope Innocent III and a refuge for the Guelphs fleeing from Tortona in the early 1300s. It entered the possessions of Benedetto Bussetti q. Following the terms established for peace between the Guelphs and Ghibellines in 1305, Melchiorre was forced to hand it over to the Milanese arbiters "Mosca" and Guido della Torre. In the early 15th century, Podigliano came into the possession of the Rampini and, in the second half of the 15th century, it lost its prerogatives as "capital of the Bishopric" to the advantage of Carezzano S. In that period, only a dovecote tower remained intact from the ancient fortress
The surviving tower of the castle was seriously damaged by the earthquake that struck the Tortonese in 1828
The current castle was rebuilt in recent times by the Bottaro family on the same site, incorporating the surviving dovecote tower into the construction
