Via Cappuccio was formerly called "contrada dei Nobili di porta Vercellina", because of the many patrician houses in that street (some of which still exist).
The street then took the name of "contrada del Cappuccio", for the presence of the church of Santa Maria ad Virginum (commonly known as the Capuchin monastery, because of the congregation of nuns who wore a hood instead of the veil; today only the cloister remains of the monastery, included in the buildings built after the suppression of the monastery).
Some sections of the current via Cappuccio took, at different times, the name of "contrada di San Pietro alla Vigna" (from a so called church now disappeared of which remains today the toponym in the name of the nearby via Vigna) and "contrada della Maddalena al Cerchio", because on its track was the church of Santa Maria Maddalena al Cerchio, founded on the ancient Roman circus of Milan (of which today remains the toponym in the name of the nearby via Circo).
Among the ancient palaces that formed the old "contrada dei Nobili" can still be seen today: Casa Cavigioli (n. 9), Casa Bosina (n. 11), Casa Radice Fossati (n. 13), Palazzo Mapelli (n. 15), Palazzo Lurani Cernuschi (n. 18), Palazzo Cornaggia (n. 21).
