Description
The striking tectonics and kinetic design of celebrated architect Tom Kundig made their European debut on an 1193 m2 private plot, blocks from the glittering Mediterranean, in the relaxed town of Sitges, just thirty minutes from Barcelona.
A far cry from the traditional stucco and tile of the region, Kundig fashioned this elemental vision with concrete block, COR-TEN steel, and glass panels. Custom build for a well-known photographer, the property features a cavernous underground studio space, able to fit 200 people or 10 automobiles comfortably. The ultimate sandbox for a creative or collector.
Bookended by massive steel pivot doors that swivel at the lightest touch, the main floor is integrated with a private outdoor space, and a manicured garden, featuring a lap pool and hardcore gym. 7.7 meter high ceilings, coupled with a wall of glass illuminate the living and dining rooms. The soaring space serves as a raw canvas and can be curated to fit any decor style. The massive sconces crowning the living room were curved on an English wheel and blackened by hand, by a sculptor of Harley-Davidson fenders and gas tanks from Oregon.
The main floor chef’s kitchen is spacious, maneuverable, and outfitted with top-line Sub Zero and Wolf appliances. The island is topped by a single slab of laser-cut Italian marble weighing 1 ton. All floors are heated thanks to 1.8 kilometers of underfloor radiant heating tubes.
On the second floor, an interior bridge connects four bedrooms, each with an en suite bath, all clad in Italian marble, cut to match. The master suite cantilevers over an outdoor terrace, and a spacious guest suite leads onto a private roof garden with views of the garden and lap pool.
From here, take the glassed elevator up to a secluded atelier with views of the sea, or down to the monumental studio space to understand why this is the largest excavation of a private residence in Spain. Hidden underground, this monument to concrete and steel is augmented with heated floors, an adjoining spa, a wine cellar, tasting room, and a tantric temple. A viewing platform with a full kitchen and lounge floats over the space. A guest apartment, complete with a kitchen and bathroom is accessed separately. State-of-the-art 4k security cameras and fingerprint access security systems ensure peace of mind.
Studio Sitges is a home, museum, creative nirvana, and a handcrafted testament to the brilliance of one of our generation's most forward-thinking modern architects.
