Description
The new luxury holiday home in Pico, restored from an old distillery that gives it its name, has been given a new lease of life by innovative management. Adega do Fogo operates as a luxury segment 5 holiday home, which can be used by families or groups of friends who want to enjoy the property in its entirety. It has a privileged view of the highest point in Portugal, and is located in the Cabrito area, in the Landscape of the Vineyard Culture of Pico Island, a site classified by UNESCO since 2004. It now has a new soul, and is the perfect stop for those who want to discover or revisit the Azorean island and its traditions, flavors and history. 2021 marks the opening of Adega do Fogo, but the relationship with this place began in 2017, when they decided to purchase the land of around 3500m2 where a vacant building facing the sea had caught their attention. The decision to build that space was made because of the energy it conveys, where one has the feeling of being in another dimension, as if one had gone back 200 years in time, perhaps because of the high walls that protect the interior from the real world. They decided to take a risk and buy the abandoned mansion with the old decrepit distillery which, they later discovered, had been one of the main distilleries in the northern part of the island, where the community produced liqueurs and brandy. In January 2020, reconstruction work began, focusing mainly on the interiors, insulation, cladding and organisation and reforestation of the exterior spaces. The original façade was fully maintained. The idea was to create a small, charming hotel, taking a vibrant, historic building and improving it to an extremely comfortable level, where people could enjoy its heritage in a pleasurable way, where the management could revive a 40-year-old tradition from the early days when people first started coming to Pico and receiving groups of friends: being able to welcome those who arrive with time, proximity and comfort, and show the world the best of the Azores, a land that the management discovered and that today is also a little bit theirs. A holiday home built in an old distillery, on private property. A building estimated to be 200 years old and its traditions were restored, and it is a journey through the history, flavours and customs of the island. 6 bedrooms, 1 living room (old distillery), 1 dining room, 1 lounge, 1 infinity pool, 1 sauna, 1 wood-fired oven with barbecue. The sauna is located in another corner of the original building that has been repurposed, all lined with cryptomeria wood, in a space that offers a real break from the real world. In the sauna, you can easily create steam from an old rainwater tank. The massage can be enjoyed in the comfort of your room, in this house that always belongs to the guest. A comfortable living room has been created in the old factory building, next to a dining room and a small, fully equipped kitchenette. Here you can enjoy local dishes and delicacies prepared by the hands of those who know how to make them, or you can choose to cook your own meals, and we will take care of cleaning the space afterwards. All rooms have access to the old balcony at the front of the main building, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the sea. In order to offer guests the widest possible range of Pico cuisine and customs, a wood-fired oven and barbecue were built in the wooded area at the top of the property. Here you can eat fresh grilled fish, or learn how to make corn cake, eaten hot with fresh homemade cheese. On the property there is an old tidal well, filled with fresh brackish water at high tide, ideal for watering or washing vegetables from the garden. The heated swimming pool allows for delightful private baths, especially pleasant after returning from an invigorating swim in the sea or a session in the sauna.
