Historical Notes

The characteristic Piazza delle Coppelle is located in the Sant’Eustachio district of Rome, just a few steps from the Pantheon. It is named after the wooden bowls containing five liters (10 “fojette” in Roman dialect), the "coppelle", which were sold by merchants in this very place and were used by the ancient Romans to transport and store acidic water, vinegar, wine, or water from the Tiber River. The term “coppella” indeed derives from the Latin “cupa,” meaning barrel.

Topographically, Piazza delle Coppelle has a U-shape that surrounds the medieval Church of San Salvatore alle Coppelle. A legend tells that the church, dating back to around the 11th century, was built on the remains of the home of S. Abbasia, an ancient Roman noblewoman. Behind the church is the main part of Piazza delle Coppelle, located in a secluded corner where a local market is also held.
