Description
On more than 10 hectares of woods and meadows, nestles timidly this imposing building, which seems to want to keep the anonymity of its extraordinary monumental appearance. To access the property, two accesses, either by the pretty main gate where a caretaker's house welcomes us, or by a long path which gives us a glimpse of the millrace of the property. Lovers of stone, history and castles, a fabulous project awaits you. As a main residence, an illustrious house or a bed and breakfast/restaurant project, the property lends itself to many projects that are limited only by what the residence inspires you and creativity. In the Saint-Emilionnais, built for the first time on one level in the 12th century, the convent of this quite remarkable abbey has an intense history, both in the Middle Ages and in the era we live in. First intended to receive pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the abbey was partly destroyed after the revolution. The convent now benefits from a second floor inspired by the Renaissance, to form a majestic double cloister on the EAST façade, made up of semicircular stone arches and buttresses. Its breathtaking WEST façade is more recent, from 1708, symmetrical and decorated with a triangular pediment, reminiscent of typical Napoleon III architecture. The monumental fireplaces and interior woodwork are also from this period. But it was in the 1970s that an illustrious writer decided to undertake major reconstruction work in strict accordance with history, even replacing the first rows of stone from the destroyed abbey, as well as the tree ornaments that were once there.
