Alberobello is an Italian municipality of 10,718 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari (province of Bari) , in Puglia. Famous for its characteristic houses called trulli (Casedda or Cummersa) which have been protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1996, it is part of the Itria Valley and the Murgia dei Trulli. Alberobello is located in the center of the south-eastern area of Bari, between Salento and Gargano. The town is laid out: part to the south, where the historic center is located (Monti district and Aia Piccola district with 1400 trulli) and part to the north: a so-called modern area but subject to restrictions. The area rests gently on the southern Murgia (average 500 meters high). Alberobello, born on a hill about 420 meters above sea level, has predominantly karst soil, which is mixed with red soil/clay, which is well suited to the cultivation of olive trees, almond trees, cherry trees and vines. The territory is crossed by a few terraces and valleys, the latter called: "pule", "vore", "gravine", "lame", interspersed with large crevasses that act as a channel for rainwater. The action of the waters, in fact, has excavated, built and modeled superficial and underground karst elements (sinkholes, caverns, caves). The causes of these phenomena can be attributed, in fact, to the nature of the calcareous soil, which has made the Murgia of trulli: on the surface an immense embroidery of lush precious tree crops, precisely, of almond trees, olive trees and vines while in the subsoil an equally fascinating spectacle of embroidery of stones that have taken on unspeakable lace-like shapes, thanks to the work of underground waters. Alberobello is located in the center of the Murgese plateau which has remote origins dating back to the Cretaceous period (around 100 million years ago) and was formed with long sedimentation limestone deposits.
