Further north, the pleasant promontories of Castiglioncello and Quercianella mark the coast near Livorno, behind which the so-called Livorno hills extend. To the south, however, rises the promontory of Piombino, on whose summit stands Populonia, which divides the Gulf of Baratti from Piombino itself, marking at the same time the border between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea
