Description:
The town of Presicce, located in the lower Salento near Capo di Leuca, is known as the town of the hypogea, due to the presence of numerous underground oil mills. The town, located in a valley particularly rich in water, is dominated by the Serra di Pozzomauro, a rise organised in terraces and dry-stone walls along the slopes and covered with Mediterranean scrub, expanses of centuries-old olive groves, pines and thorny oak species.

The history of Presicce's origins is not well delineated. It was probably the large presence of superficial aquifers that attracted the first settlements, which seem to date back to around the 7th century. The coat of arms of Presicce, a deer drinking from a spring, seems to trace this abundance of water in the Presicce area. The actual foundation of the village was the work of the inhabitants of Pozzomauro, a settlement located on the hill to the south-west of the present town. Of this settlement, the ruins of an ancient tower used as a defence against Saracen invasions, a Basilian crypt dug into the rock and a small church with a very basic style still remain. In 1481, the Saracens invaded Pozzomauro and destroyed it. The origins of the town's name also seem to be linked to this settlement, in fact it is thought that Presicce derives from the Latin word 'praesidium' as indicating a military garrison. In 1088, Presicce became part of the Principality of Taranto, from which we know that the fief passed through the hands of various noble families including the Securo, the De Specola, the Gonzaga, the Brayda and the Bartilotti Princes. In 1714, the fief was elevated to a principality and subsequently entrusted to the de' Liguoro family.
