Description
A bit of history: Milfontes Castle was already a fortress in the time of the Carthaginians. When the Romans occupied the Iberian Peninsula, they turned the fortress into a fort. At the departure of the Romans the Castle was taken by the Arabs or Moors who rebuilt it. In 1204 it was taken to the Moors by Bishop D. Soeiro with the aid of the Crusaders, being offered to the order of São Tiago. Little by little it was degrading. The village was targeted by the Algerian pirates, who raided the site several times. It was completely rebuilt in 1590 during the first part of the Spanish occupation. The parts of the walls that are now seen date from this period. When the Pirates gave up their attacks, it became unnecessary to take defence measures and again the time took charge of turning the fortress into ruins. In 1906 it was sold at auction by the Government and belonged to three different owners. In 1939 it was acquired in a state of complete ruin by Dom Luís de Castro e Almeida, who restored it over the years in its current draft. From 1959 he began to receive "paying guests" with whom he shared his motto "Living without friends is not living". The family of the heirs of this motto eternalises the tradition of welcome and hospitality in a frame renovated in 1998.
