Agrate Conturbia is an Italian town of 1,557 inhabitants in the province of Novara in Piedmont. The municipality is divided into the two hamlets of Agrate and Conturbia. The centers are located in the slightly hilly area between Cressa and Borgo Ticino south of Lake Maggiore. The toponym Agrate, formerly Agredade Curtis or Agredade, dates back to the Roman person name Acrius, followed by the suffix -atum; according to other historians to agr-et-atum, place of the fields.
Agrate is indicated by historians as an ancient Roman station, a thesis demonstrated by the discovery of stones, artifacts and inscriptions. The first description mentions that there was the V legion [unclear] Roman, commanded by Pallante, friend of Caligula and probable founder of Pallanza. Some authors instead recognize Conturbia as a very ancient settlement on stilts, less ancient than those of Mercurago, near Arona, a few kilometers away.
A demonstration of an ancient past is documented of a Vir magnificus (Illustrious Character), a certain Rutterpert from Agredate possessed landholdings in limit Plombense committee. Some research has shown that in the 10th century the lords of Da Conturbia were boni homini and advisors to the bishop of Novara.
Emperor Otto I, who became the owner of the Curtis Regia of Agredade, donated it to the canons of San Giulio. Agrate then became part of the fiefdom of the Counts of Castello, passing to the Gattico family before and in 1412 to Lancellotto and Ermes Visconti. Subsequently Filippo Maria Visconti assigned the fiefdom to the Borromeo who kept it until the 18th century. Agrate and Conturbia each had their own castle.
