It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 82.21 km² and with 63,408 inhabitants (2011). The city expanded to the south towards Vila do Conde, forming an urban agglomeration of 100,000 inhabitants, the seventh largest in Portugal and the third largest in the North. It is one of the urban centres of the North of Portugal and the centrality of the neighbouring municipalities of Vila do Conde and Esposende. The first populations settled in its territory between four and six thousand years ago. Around 900 BC, instability in the region led to the foundation of a walled city, Cividade de Terroso, which developed maritime trade routes with the civilisations of classical antiquity. Modern Póvoa de Varzim emerged after the Roman Republic conquered the city around 138 BC, and fishing and fish processing plants developed shortly thereafter, forming the basis of the local economy. By the 11th century, the fishing industry and fertile fields formed the basis of a feudal lordship, and Varzim was fiercely contested between local lords and the regional lords, the first kings of Portugal, which led to the creation of the municipality in 1308 and its submission to medieval monastic rule a few years later. Póvoa de Varzim's importance re-emerged with the Age of Discovery due to the skill and wealth of its shipbuilders and navigators, who traded around the world on complex trade routes. By the 17th century, the fish processing industry had gained new momentum, and some time later Póvoa became the dominant fishing port in northern Portugal. The city of Póvoa de Varzim has been a renowned seaside town for three centuries, the most popular in northern Portugal, which has established an influential literary culture and patronage in music and theatre. It is one of the few legal gambling zones in Portugal and has significant textile and food industries. The city maintains its own cultural identity, a rich fishing cuisine and ancient traditions, such as the Poveira symphonies, the agricultural technique of the masseiras and festivals.
