Tresivio, a town located halfway up the Rhaetian side east of Sondrio, is one of the most illustrious municipalities in Valtellina. During the almost two centuries that Santa Casa dei Visconti and degli Sforza ruled the valley, from 1335 to 1512, it was the most important town in the valley. But its importance has its roots in a much more remote past. On the slopes of the Calvary cliff, which drops from Tresivio to the valley floor, artefacts dating back to the Copper and Bronze Ages have been found, as well as rock carvings from the ancient and middle Bronze Age (20th-17th century BC). The most famous find, however, is the Tresivio stone, with an inscription in an alphabet defined as North Etruscan or Rhaetian: according to the testimony of the famous Latin writer of Como origin Pliny the Elder, "the Rhaetians come from the Etruscan lineage" and owe their name to a mythical leader, Reto, who is said to have guided them in the colonisation of the Alpine territory;
