The Serra de Sintra, with its palaces full of the mystique of local legends, looks like something out of a fairy tale.
Classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is full of historically important sites such as the Pena Palace, the Seteais Palace, the Monserrate Palace, the Moorish Castle, the Capuchos Convent and the Quinta da Regaleira.
Sintra has the best of both worlds: the mountains with their magical forest and the blue sea of white sand beaches, beautiful landscapes.
Among the most popular beaches are Praia Grande, Praia Pequena and Praia das Macas, preferred by families due to their spacious sands and saltwater pools.
Macas beach is the last stop of the traditional and emblematic Sintra tram.
Heading north, on the way to Ericeira, a fishing village and well-known seaside resort, we come across the Azenhas do Mar, with its white houses on the hillside and the pool carved into the rock.
This is followed by a succession of beaches along 8 km, with excellent waves and conditions, which make this coast a World Surfing Reserve and a preferred destination in Portugal.
Praia dos Coxos, Baia dos Dois Irmaos or the mythical Ribeira d'Ilhas, where a stage of the World Surfing Championship has been taking place since 1985, are internationally famous.
These places, such as Ericeira, Ribamar and Sao Lourenco Beach, are also known for their restaurants specializing in fresh fish and seafood.
Culturally, Sintra has a lot to offer: the Olga Cadaval Cultural Centre, the Antonio Silva Auditorium, the Mira Sintra House of Culture, the Sintra Art Museum, the Angelo Teixeira Museum, the Ferreira de Castro Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Sao Miguel Odrinhas, the Air Museum.
