Coldirodi is a village in the municipality of Sanremo. The town is located at an altitude of 254 meters above sea level, it lies along the crest of the hill that separates the inlets of Sanremo and Ospedaletti, in an extraordinary panoramic position. The name of Coldirodi derives from the legendary presence of the Knights of Rhodes in the area. In the Middle Ages, returning from a Crusade, the Knights of Rhodes (formerly Knights of Jerusalem, then of Malta) stopped here to treat wounded comrades. A hospital installed near the sea by the Knights of Rhodes would also have given rise to the name Ospedaletti. The first inhabitants chose this area, in the fifteenth century, because it was more easily defendable from the pirates who infested the coast.
Modern Coldirodi is a picturesque village on the ridge and has a cultural and tourist resource of the highest order, although less valorised than it deserves: the Rambaldi Art Gallery. On the main square of the town, next to the Rambaldi art gallery, is the church of San Sebastiano, of medieval foundation, rebuilt in the Baroque period. The monastery of Sant'Elia is located along the road that goes from Sanremo to Coldirodi. It is a modern masterpiece (1958) by the architect Gio Ponti. «Always remember», the architect said one day to the cloistered nuns who lived in the convent «that when they ask me which is the best of my works I always answer immediately that it is your Cald
