The Pestana Valley Nature Resort, is a low-density tourist resort, located between the villages of Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, developing in 33 hectares of traditionally Algarve landscape.
In the Algarve, in the municipality of Lagoa, is the village of Carvoeiro where I was very, very happy. It remains a very special place, even though its sand is getting smaller and smaller, and in the summer it is almost impossible to get a place to extend the beach towel.
The current population of Carvoeiro does not reach three thousand souls and was once a predominantly fishing village, but it has grown and, nowadays, tourism is its main focus of business and economic development (it has many shops, restaurants and bars, as well as houses for rent).
It is from Carvoeiro that many of the boats depart to discover the coastal strip of the Barlavento and its caves, cliffs and spectacular rock formations. The village is small, with white houses encavalitado, with some hotels further from the center and is a very lively place, especially at the time of the first and summer. Calmer between autumn and winter.
The name "Carvoeiro" originates from the history of the Arabs in this region: "carboiere" meant "fishing village" and, for centuries on end, fishing was the livelihood of the local population. History also says that the place of Carvoeiro became better known when the fleet of the commander D. Pedro da Cunha defeated the pirates of Turco Xarramet in 1544. This has always been, by the way, a site of several battles with privateers.
