And there are those who assure that the traditional bread of São Martinho is the best in the Alentejo.
Spring gives rise to the olive herb, the steppe and the curry herb, as well as medicinal plants such as carqueja, seven-sangria grass, foxglove and silver grass. Other plants that give great color to the fields are the molar tojo, the thistle of the south (Cynara algarviensis, endemic to the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula), the pansies, the steppe, the marioila, the herb-, the onion-albarran, the hyacinth, the macerovia and the small lilies.
'This territory has been inhabited since Prehistory, as observed in the archaeological station Necropolis of Pardieiro, 7km southwest of S. Martinho, which revealed some characteristics of the community that lived there 2500 years ago (I Iron Age). Next to the eleven tombs of the necropolis were found epigraphed stelae, that is, stone lages with inscriptions in the writing of the southwest, the first form of alphabetic writing in the Iberian Peninsula. Three population centers, Amoreiras, S. Martinho and Conqueiros, disputed for centuries the seat of the parish but S. Martinho won the dispute, since it was installed there in the century. XVIII the Mother Church, of Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical inspiration, built under the auspices of the Order of Santiago de Espada.'
