Description
Câmara de Lobos, located on the south coast of the island of Madeira, was the first locality inhabited by João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered this "pearl of the Atlantic". Having remained there between 1420 and 1424, this was the first settlement created in Madeira, elevated to parish in 1430. Its historical legacy is therefore very relevant.
The name of this municipality comes from the fact that, at the time of the discovery of the island, there was a large amount of fur seals in the cove that can still be found here today with the same configuration. In this region, there remain several monuments that refer to this historical period, from the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, founded in the fifteenth century, to the old convent of São Bernardino, from 1425, passing through the church of São Sebastião, built in the sixteenth
century. After a few more than seventy years, the landscape of Madeira has changed significantly, but the picturesque charm of this small cove has remained practically unchanged.
It is no coincidence that all travel itineraries about the archipelago include a visit to the Bay of Câmara de Lobos... The feeling is that of strolling through a small village by the sea, where the streets are punctuated by cozy bars, souvenir shops, restaurants of traditional delicacies and even a chapel
