Description
Palmariggi is a delightful little village a few kilometers from the center of the famous Otranto. Its particular name is linked to the event after the taking of Otranto by the Turks. The inhabitants, in fact, invoked the protection of the Madonna who appeared holding a palm tree and with an army in tow. The Turks, frightened by the army, moved away and the population was saved. In memory of the event, the small town changed its name to Palmariggi, which means "You who hold the palm tree," in honor of the Madonna.
In this delightful town we offer for sale an extraordinary period residence of the late 1800s, with a commercial area of about 960sqm, distributed on two levels with two cellars and surrounded by a charming garden of about 1750 sqm fully fenced and a few steps from the historic center and the Aragonese Castle.
Through the central aisle of the important facade enriched with effigies and decorations in Lecce stone one enters the hallway of about 70 sq m with barrel vault, which gives access to the 2 apartments on the ground floor, one on the left side and the other on the right side. On the left side there are 3 rooms, once used as a studio, in which there are ancient fireplaces in leccese stone, while on the right, we find an apartment consisting of 3 rooms plus accessories overlooking the lush garden that houses a spring well and a cistern, an orchard and a citrus grove in production and magnolia trees. Via a paved pathway covered with a vine arbor, access is gained to the rabbit hutch and dovecote, ancient rooms once used for animal shelter.
Also from the hallway and via a wide staircase, one accesses the upper floor, while the under-staircase serves as a link to an internal courtyard, the nucleus of the entire building, which gives access to the various rooms once used for storage and stables, surmounted by the typical star vaults, partly exposed and partly plastered.
The upper floor guards the noble dwelling and consists of: entrance hall, a charming living room with frescoes and balcony, three bedrooms, one of which is decorated with frescoes and loggia, kitchen, living room, bathroom and multipurpose room. Also on the same floor is an additional apartment consisting of: living room, kitchen with small terrace, bedroom, additional room, bathroom and storage room.
To embellish the dwelling there are the refined architectural details, the cement floors typical of the area and the large terraces, distributed on several levels, from which you can admire the historic center of Palmariggi and the lush surrounding countryside.
The palace is in a good state of preservation, both static and structural, although it needs some renovation work. moreover, it lends itself optimally to be converted into a major boutique hotel, given the majestic architectural structure and the proximity to the most sought-after tourist destinations of Salento among which are: Otranto and Maglie which are 10 km away, the beaches of Santa Maria di Leuca 40 km, and the baroque center of Lecce is only 30 minutes away.
It should be noted that, with a separate negotiation, it is also possible to purchase a park of more than 11 hectares less than 2 km from the stately home, more precisely in the Montevergine locality, adjacent to the sanctuary of the same name. This is a green lung where you can breathe clean air, subdivided as follows: a pine forest of about 20,000 sq. m., 53,000 sq. m. of arable land and 40,000 sq. m. previously used for bauxite mining, now pastureland. Abandon, then, the usual hustle and bustle of the city and imagine yourself here appreciating the serenity of the countryside, nature made up of lots of greenery and the chirping of the birds as the seasons come and go.
