Rich in history and charm, the main body for 3200 square meters total consists of the important Medici Abbey of 3206 square meters rich in history, art and charm where there is the ancient church of 571 square meters, the monks' quarters in addition to the rooms for practices and daily monastic life and the remains of the ancient cloisters supported by beautiful fifteenth-century columns and capitals. There are still ancient barrels and tools used by the monks for the production and storage of wine and oil. Adjacent are the various outbuildings totaling 2,500 square meters and there is also a historic and evocative underground passage connecting the abbey with one of the outbuildings. The abbey dates back to the year 1084, built by Count Hugh of Tuscany, who, lost in those woods, would have vowed to erect it if he had been saved. Belonging for many centuries and generations to the Medici family, in the early 1700s the monastery was completely restored by Grand Duke Cosimo III, who entrusted it to a community of Trappists, and in Buonsollazzo or "Buonsolatio" the first "Trappa" in Italy was founded, to reach the latest times, when in the Abbey the Camaldolese established a college there, in which several generations of monks received their first training. The name "Buonsollazzo" comes from the Latin bonum solacium or "Buonsolatio," which expresses good exposure to the sun.
