Nova Petrópolis is a town with roughly 22.000 inhabitants in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It is located in the Serra Gaúcha, mountains part of the state, about 95 km north of Porto Alegre. The main big cities nearby are Caxias do Sul and Gramado, as well as the town’s of Picada Café, Linha Nova, Santa Maria do Herval, Morro Reuter and Feliz.
Nova Petrópolis is located on the Rota Romântica touristic route, together with the cities of Gramado, Canela and São Francisco de Paula in the Região das Hortênsias (Hydrangeas region, due to the amount of flowers planted on the area). Its architecture as well as base culture and gastronomy are reminiscent of its German past. German immigrants arrived in the region during the 1800’s, in 1866 there were 991 mostly German settlers, in 1912 there were already 8,500 residents. Nowadays, the German language is taught as a compulsory subject in its schools and many of the German’s culture manifestations remain alive, such as folkloric dances and choirs.
