Founded in 1859 when gold was discovered along the Blue River, the town of Breckenridge continued to prosper long after the gold and silver played out. With the opening of Breckenridge Ski Resort in 1961, vibrant new economic life melded with the area's rich history to create the celebrated town that visitors and residents enjoy today. In winter, Breckenridge draws skiers from around the world to its famous vast and varied terrain. The resort and the town are equally popular in summer when visitors enjoy endless options for outdoor adventure, as well as the town's one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants, spas, museums, and wildly popular outdoor festivals. Breckenridge is located in Summit County, about an hour's drive west of Denver. Boasting close proximity to three major ski areas (Breckenridge, Copper, Keystone), vast expanses of public land and several mountain ranges, it is no surprise that Summit County is known as "Colorado's Playground."
