Susie Weissman came to Block Island as a teenage day tripper in the 50s and again in 1966 with her husband and basically has been part of the community ever since. Married to David (Butch) Weissman, she and Butch helped run the Bellevue, owned by Butch’s parents Ben & Doris Weissman, until the family sold it in 1972. The family then built a family home for use during summers and fishing trips, on a parcel adjacent to the Bellevue, neighboring the Dodge’s and Kiley’s. They moved to the Island full time in 1988, when she and David sold their real estate development and construction business in Vermont. Susie quickly integrated into Island living. They built a year-round home on Old Mill Road and she joined the ecumenical choir, was a regular at the Farmer’s market selling produce from her huge gardens, French bread, coffee cakes, and beautiful handmade quilts.
Desiring to put her 22 years of real estate experience back to work, Susie received her Rhode Island license and joined Sullivan Real estate in 1991 and worked full time until moving to Wyoming in 1995. While in WY, she kept her RI license active with Cindy and returned to the island once again in 2001 to live and work fulltime in real estate as co-owner of Attwood Real Estate ( with Cindy’s blessing), taking over as sole owner in 2008 when Simone Attwood retired.
She ran the business with her daughter Jeannie and other part time help for the next 10 years.
In November of 2018, wanting to step back a bit and devote more time to her board position with Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMI) and to her music and family, Cindy and Susie agreed to merge the two companies. With the Sullivan crew taking over the day to day management of the Attwood rental book, Susie is now able to focus on real estate sales, BIMI, fishing, clamming, music and enjoying her family and friends - a wonderful full circle story!
